You don't say what type of material from Youtube, be it more voice or music or something else. You might look into the Sonic Anomaly JSFX - VOLA 2 or Trileveler 2, which more cater to the vocal end of things.

Thanks guys, sorry I should have given more details. It's for live playback of youtube music videos. I have created Playlists on youtube and shuffle the playback but different videos play at different volume levels so I am thinking a compressor/limiter might help normalize the volumes of all videos? I need to have youtube and all music softwares playing through Reaper though as that is how my system is set up.

So i figure I can add a plugin in Reaper for this only and activate/deactivate it only when playing youtube videos.

This might work for you, if I’m understanding properly.

There’s a Chrome extension to do exactly that… but it has no controls, and squashes the living shit out of everything; I can’t listen with it for very long. Worse, it’s mapped to the “v” key, so the volume jumps and drops whenever you’re commenting. 3/10, don’t recommend.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

You might still take a look at VOLA 2, if you want to install and play with a JSFX in Reaper, as I think it'll get you there. I would suggest an autogain plugin though rather than a compressor. Letimix Gainmatch would do it or one of Hornet's like the Normalizer or VU mk4. You just need something that "rides the Youtube fader" for you.

I'm on a Mac and I use SoundSource with all sorts of plugins, particularly airwindows, to compensate for poor YT audio at my system monitoring output. Never thought to try a normalizer because I always manually adjust volume levels.

You could try APU's (not the Simpsons character) Loudness compressor, it does more than just a compressor.. it's a volume leveller/'targetter', and pretty damn powerful. And nuts cheap - $20 right now.

Hey guys, sorry for the late response. I will be trying out the above plugins on Sunday or early next week so I am installing them now but having problems activating 2 of them Vola2 and Gainmatch in Reaper:

Both of these are not showing in the FX window in Reaper. That Vola2 download when extracted doesn't seem to be a VST file? I am running windows 10 64bit. Any ideas please?

Gainmatch is a vst3, so do what you would do with one of those or check with Letimix.

VOLA 2, is a JSFX as previously mentioned. You have two options:
a) If you have reapack installed, import the following repository
https://github.com/Sonic-Anomaly/Sonic- ... /index.xml
b) Otherwise you can save VOLA2.jsfx from this link and put in your Reaper Effects folder
https://github.com/Sonic-Anomaly/Sonic- ... ind/master

The benefit of a) is you would also get Bass Professor Mk2, Transpire, Trileveler and the rest of those goodies, but you have to install Reapack. You could also install those manually using the save as and move to the proper folder method.

Plenty of googleable tutorials on jsfx and reapack. This gets you 90% of the way there. The rest is up to you.

Hey guys, just reporting back. I just tested playing these 2 tunes, the first one is profoundly louder than the other.

The guys on the Reaper forum had told me that no 'comp/limiter' will be able to normalize Youtube music videos but I still decided to do my own testing. Trying both Finaloud and APU Loudness Compressor does not help in any way, at least with the default settings.

If you're not willing to work out how these things work and how to get the best from them using that learned knowledge, I'm not sure how other people can help. Why would any default preset be the instant fix? I've never experienced that, ever.

I'll say it here: no single plugin will be able to do this for you in the perfect way you imagine. None. You will always get distortions, peaks where the volume management system didn't kick in quick enough, or clamps down too hard and ruins the explosion or bang or something.

In order to get any useful results from tools which might be used to manage your YT levels, you will need a large window so the volume management thing can respond in the right way. I promise you there is no setting on any of these products which will give you instant levelled-volume contentment. I'd say 400-500 ms is a good starting point, and that will be very noticeable while your consuming. And even that won't produce perfect results.

It feels like, to me, you need to go down and volume management rabbit-hole to work out how it all does it's thing and what tricks we use to make the volume-changing tools work as little as possible, which is the ideal (otherwise you 'hear' the volume changing, which is distracting).

Honestly, I think APU Loudness Compressor can do what you need, but you might need to read up a bit on the terms used to describe what happens in the volume-management process, read the manual and just play around with it on some different signals. You're also dealing with the different volume levels on the tracks themselves which could be vastly different across even a single genre. No single tool can be configured to deal with that variety of input signal volumes.

But yeah, I hope you find what you need; it's a tricky problem without a single satisfying solution.
