is cubase 3.7 considered abandonware now? what about those native instrument plugins?

Post

Apparently NI considered it since 2020 when they stopped authorizing a whole buncha products & 2 years before that dropped support for all older OS-

https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2020 ... -products/

So even if you bought the stuff back then they don't care about you having been a former customer you still get the double-middle-fingers for not being a current customer. If you contact they even ask you WHY you are still using the old stuff...

They don't like the answers...Such as>>>

-It works fine I don't need your new bloated crap!
-It uses way less RAM-CPU...
-I am STILL on an old OS & don't plan on moving up to a spyware OS...
-Sounds better than the newer encrypted crapola...
-Because I PAID for it!
-I like to make my music OFFLINE please...
-None of your business, authorize it NOW!

MR Dave 126 Thanks for the explanation yes, there are many reasons for using old & most others do not understand. I like the screenshot you have outdone me on that one...

You see I had never tried this old a Cubase before but since it works fine it is good to go. i have tried 5.1 but it wants to hook shared VST folder but that has a setting but THEN not able to load a VSTi because no mixer track error which stems from having too many rewire stuff on the machine which take up tracks without even using them. Same with SX 1.03 plus both those won't finish a scan of plugins fully ever... Neither will report back what was failing either...

It's amazing how 'stupid' Cubase got as then they figured you would never use up all tracks in the rewire sitting there nor have billions of plugins to scan...

So Cubase 3.70 is safe but not R2 as it is where Steinberg started using shared plugins folder hooking I had not even checked on the rewire but in regular 3.70 rewire does not work for me so a good thing...Whew...

Other than that have to skip to Cubase SX 3.1.1 which has rewire all sorted out & can scan through a billion modern plugs without much puking or diarrhea...

3.70 is fast & easy no manual needed really everything setup very nice looks inside it's own plugins folder test a few at a time SIMPLE-SIMPLE!!

eLawnMust,

Thanks for you help!

I see you have real knowledge about vintage vst. I use for arrangement of audio Krystal audio engine, it s good for it and sometimes Energy XT 1.4.

I search interesting creative old (free) sampler vsts, preferably not synthedit ones, is there reconemdations for some?

I know usual ones as shortcircuit, sc sampler, highlife, helios...

Yahoo. I finaly found a pro 53 version that will run as a vsti on the win 98/cubase vst 24 combo.

The version that Elawnmust uses didn't load under windows 98. since Im stuck in win98 land with my lexicon studio Im very happy to finaly found a version that apeared as an vst instrument (pro 53 ver 3.000.14)

ps the screenschot I posted earlier on came from an article in sos
https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/lexicon-studio (https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/lexicon-studio)

Some background on why I finaly 25 yrs later are intresed in a softsynth : )
I saw a demo online of the nordlead 1 that got me intrested.
I rember visiting a friend when the nl1 just came out.
he had a nl 1 and some fancy pc and that was about it.
I was amused and horrified at the same time realizing this was the way of the future.
Some decent sounds came out of the nl but no obxa or even dx7 gritt but still intresting. basicly a computer like the dx7 but now programmed to model analog synths.

I went back to collect many synths that at that time where being abandoned by artistst....poor synths. ( I gave them a propper new home : )

Now here it is....some weeks ago there was a nl 1 for sale localy and I got intrested.
I got all kinds of tone genrators from fm to analog / early samplers..the works but no softsynth so I tought.. maybe the nl can add some new textures to the wall of sound.

Then I realized... I got neon on my vintage daw...but neon sucks.
There must be some softsynth for me ....so instead of throwing money at a nl1 i figured lets try some of the vintage softsynths.... I found a standalone version of pro 52 and was quite amazed ...
next challege. get a version of pro 5/52/53 running as a vsti onder cubase vst24.

It took me a few days but now its working.. I love a challenge and... yes. I finaly join the rest of humanity in the softsynth revolution.

That's a heck of a testimonial... Well you are a rarity on this planet using such an oldish cubase on windows 98 I also think that was the last that could be used on windows 98. Still available is Making Waves which is a pretty cool DAW & super cheap as well & it can still be used all the way down to windows 95 but will not work on windows 8/10/11... It has great workflow like old Fruity Loops but different very musical capable...

Even simply dragging a single sample onto track in Making Waves there's many ways to make musical-
Image

Very good MIDI capabilities as well...

As to dimxl well it really depends what you want to do with the sampler... Personally I like to sample a VSTi with HighLife then make that into a soundfont with every semitone sampled for max quality. Then use either Kontakt 2 or One of the Oscillasoft plugs like XFact2, Universal or Fiction. The Qscillasoft plugs are very complex & also every param has automation available which makes the soundfont VERY musical just like using a Synth, not stagnant at all. Except much less CPU is used than a Synth...

Here you see XFact2 in SVArTracker alotta stuff on it & Many FX panels along the bottom including several sequencers. You see Param list on left look at how small scroll cursor is the list is a mile long & much. much can be LFO driven-
Image

And yes, NOT synthedit as I do see where you are coming from on that...

Sometimes I use Muon DS-404 because I can easily convert to it's format. DS-404 works well in both Ultrano Dreamer & Spacetoad, here in SVAr-
Image

It may appear it has many params for automation but these are for 16 different timbrals so very limited each one...

Not a fan of old Emagics Logic which always seemed like a dildo app however do like the EXSP24 sampler which also accepts soundfonts it will convert the soundfont to the EXS format... It has quite a few params to automate to make the sound musical not near as much as XFact2-
Image

For taking a singular WAV & making the unusual out of it Loomer Cumulus is pretty rad. You can adjust what segments in it to sequence each with it's own FX & modulation with crossfading great for making pads & atmospheres-
Image

It has quite a few params to automate as well...

None of the above are synthedit... For a more conventional sampler an old good one was Vsampler, I have also tried CreamWare Volkszampler but it's a bit dated, nowadays I still thinks TAL-Sampler is quite tops & it works even in super-crappy hosts... Then yes, there are the shortcircuits 1 & 2 which are good. Even though it's in Reason the NN-XT has been bad-ass since day one. I still use Reason 3.0 it's nice that EVERYTHING works like it should 100% and with low CPU-RAM you can have 40-60 tracks no needing any bouncing...

Post

In a groove here... Covering old forgottens... Fruity Loops 2.54-2.72 quite nice for dragging a simple sample onto a channel & making it musical even with the crap-ass keyboard before the actual piano roll in version 3. The sampler could be made very musical with simple sample workflow-

That was around 2000, Also Making Waves 1.95 had very similar but only internal FX going on but DID have triplet capability plus FULL MIDI capability to boot. Same easy sample on track workflow with all FX as separate tracks. What you see as the various red bars are the INFLUENCE the current curve has for that particular measure so can be adjusted in realtime for dynamic musical variation in subtle fashion or not....

Here in 1.95 working on a tune 'Monks Have Sects' a droneish paddish tune using various vocals including sampled from the output of Delay Lama-
Image

Making Waves claim to fame was in 2001 when Daniel Bedingfield made a hit tune in it that apparently he made 400,000 bucks off it...

Probably was done in version 2.05-2.2...

Here's a Promo Interview for Making Waves he did in 2005-

OK, Back to Cubase VST24 3.70... Here is Drumsynth which is very generic name but I had never seen this one before. It's pretty good for electronic drums comes with quite a few presets & theres envelopes for all kinda params much to change, Mix-Match then save your bank... Here using with Waldorf D-Pole making sounds much like Ugo Ironhead...

Image

This is the ONLY one of 4 plugs there that works in 3.70-

https://web.archive.org/web/20111120021 ... /drumsynth

Also testing the legendary Synth1 works great plus I got nearly 20,000 presets for it... This along with the previously tested Green Oak Crystal are both radical additions to olden 3.70>>>
Image

Looks like Phutura works well in 3.70 but Philteroid refuses to even show up as a plugin... Also trying some GUI-less JS Plugins which work quite well better than many with face paint-
Image

Phutura is here-

https://web.archive.org/web/20180818080 ... hutura.php

Nice thing about Phutura is that the MIDI Controller side is mirrored in the VST Params list I wish everybody did that...

The JS Gui-less bundle is here go to bottom & get AIO-

https://web.archive.org/web/20081221174 ... 9/plug.htm

Thanks, the Drumsynth is very very nice, bu no panorama for sounds)

Also I checked.... Making Waves work on Win 10! Win 10 is better for old Win apps than win 7.

I would like to try Oscillasoft plugs like XFact2, Universal or Fiction but where I can find it...)

The same about EXSP24. I tried to find it but failed) for now)

I have Cumulus and DS404, good VSTs)

Post

OK, I never checked it but on the download page here it specifically states it don't work on it-

http://www.makingwavessoftware.com/

So make sure all sectors & function check out if it does then good for you maybe your BUILD of windows 10 it functions in but maybe not some others. I have not tried because I don't use windows 10 nor 11 nor 8 nor 7 nor vista....

But if you find you like it & register then you need to overwrite with the Making Waves 6 beta10 that is here-

http://www.spacehead.co.uk/download.htm

You license will be detected only difference will be the assets folder will now be in a folder in your 'My Music' folder rather that the app dir & plugin scanning is GREATLY improved but still not 100%...

If you are looking for 'those' kinda plugs you should PM me>>>

Cracking on with olden Cubase it appears the Breebaart free bundle all work in 3.70 pretty quality stuff-
Image

Get that here-

http://web.archive.org/web/201304041308 ... vst_jb.htm

Looks like the old Korg from 2004 works great, LegacyCell & Wavestation as well as the awesome MDE-X for FX, That's all that I am interested in for those-

Here's TwinDelay which is quite nice NOT synthedit crapola (otherwise it would not work in H8)

https://web.archive.org/web/20130612175 ... elay10.zip

Also not synthedit are the SweetBoy stuff, real good you get a couple nice reverbs too one with a GUI one without-

https://web.archive.org/web/20080702123 ... etboy-vst/

Every vertex in that EQ can be automated BTW...

A couple nice GUI-Less Plugs from Vladgsound (Tokyo Dawn) Go here & right under the Logo image there's a download for the old stuff, larger than what you would expect because it has mac versions, etc...

https://vladgsound.wordpress.com/

Then extract the GUI-Less Molot Compressor & Limiter No.6...NICE, No graphics just knobs or sliders-

In H8 it's knobs-
Image

Also is nan5 Synth which is very simple but fast to adjust plus it's C++ not crapola so works well-

http://web.archive.org/web/200605050400 ... t/nan5.zip

OK Molot & Limiter also working in SKALE just fine as purdy sliders-
Image

nan5 also work great in SKALE as well...
