I know I could go back to the mid-1990's and try and dig out the old floppy disks of my Amiga Octamed compositions or find the CD where I recorded all the little trance tunes I made with Music 2000, but I don't have those available. What I do have though is music I created with Reason 1.xx back in 2001 (sometime around June). This was created on my old and long dustbin Athlon 750 PC I had.Still sounds good to me today I think

Unfortunately someone leaked most of my unfinished modules so there they are on the internet. f**k that guy.

This one I did in 26.4.1991, I was 15 years old. 4ch amiga mod, with space saving instruments (100KB). Kinda Dr.Awesome alike tune

Wow, that sounded fantastical

, particularly for a 15-year-old. The first section reminded me of the music from the platform Amiga game Lionheart whilst the second part reminded me of the game Turrican (also my CB handle at the time whilst still in high school when I was 15/16), and the last part reminded me of R-Type. It sounds like you had a pretty good grasp of the hexadecimal commands. I know that when I started programming stuff it was all qwerty keyboard and it wasn't till much later on that I got to grips with the hexadecimal codes. I used many of the trackers that were out there but didn't create music tracks with them as such. Octamed Sound Studio (the full program given away on CU Amiga magazine was where I got really into it for a good few years until I got my Playstation 1 in 1997). It wasn't a long time after programming by hand that I used a MIDI keyboard for programming music and thus triggering sounds on my Yamaha PSR 330 which I still have working today). Going back to using samples again kinda felt like a downgrade in quality but I also felt I missed the creative carving one could do with samples in the editor. Did you program that entire piece from the qwerty keyboard or with an external keyboard?

It's hard to be certain but I think it was this. I know I made the percussion loop in Fruityloops and exported it as audio into Orion, so it's definitely not something we'd done in hardware. This is a live version from 2004, a couple of years after I'd written it -

The contrast between topic title & first post could make one think it's only purpose is to let the OP show off, but I've chosen to ignore that.

My first own computer was a Sinclair ZX-81, which was totally mute. At school, however, there was a Tandy TRS-80, which could only BEEP. With some POKE commands you could change the frequency, and I discovered that by alternating the frequency quickly you could fake it played two tones simultaneously.

My first "real" PC was still of the beeping kind. With gwbasic I could do the same ole tricks. My dad was running around the house, trying to locate the phone he heard ringing (first type with electronic rings instead of physical bells) but it came from my room. I then knew I had found the right beep frequencies and timings to switch them.

My first real piece of music on PC was not my own composition. With the alternating frequency method I found I could let it squeek out the theme to Dr.Who. I recall it first loaded a picture of a fractal I prepared earlier (costed full days to compute)

Can I still show that to you and let you hear it? Probably not. I might have uploaded the compiled .exe (TurboPascal) to a BBS, and it must be on a 5.25" floppy somewhere. But it's likely lost forever and still exists in my own memory only.

Well I spent most of my time in front of Protracker back in those days so I knew it like the back of my hand or something like that. Started in 1987 using SoundFX, (Ultimate) SoundTracker etc. first.

Yes, from the keyboard, had no MIDI keyboard back then, would've cost a lot!

Here's a bit more recent where Amiga is doing drums and a couple of bass sounds - not mixed. Then on top them are Diva & Omni. Original is amiga mod too.

The tune is ok! Its the mix thats a bit lacking - tilted to treble and some sounds are reason aliasing but hey, its still not a bad tune at all.

Don't compose using a DAW, occasionally notation software. I record stuff I've written on the guitar or keyboard or in my head. For that, Dr. T's, then Pro 24 back in the 80's. At various times, Atari Real Time, Cakewalk, Cubase and Nuendo, Studio One for couple of years, Bitwig 1.x for a year, now Live. Moved from Windows to macOS several years ago.
