Hi,

i have owned some hardware synths from Roland in the past (e.g. Jupiter 8, MKS-80, MKS-50, D-50) and recently i seem to become a "collector" of Roland emulations.

Maybe this was already done but i decided to collect a list of Roland gear (synths, drum machines, FXs) with corresponding emulations. I tried to use dedicated emulations and not just synths which are sounding similar.

Audio demos based on synths mentioned above:

The question is when does a plugin count as 'emulation'.

For instance there is a bunch of Roland-based stuff from EFM, but other than an approximation of the UIs im not sure if one could really call those 'emulation' in the true meaning of the word.

Most of the plugins above were made to emulate a certain hardware. How good the emulations are is another question. I did not give any judgment here except if you check which plugins i got (those with yellow color) and which not.
Anyway some of the free ones like Phutura i just had no time to check yet.

For example Strobe from Synth Squad could be inspired by a SH-101 but i would not go so far to say it's an emulation.

Well, thats just the point. Thats why im wondering whether plugins which are more an attempt at 'recreating the conceptual aspects' than an attempt at emulating the acoustical properties of the hardware in question, should be posted here as well?

THere is Marvin, a japanese guy who makes nice (and free) emulations of Roland Drum machines : you will find the Tr-808, tr-909, and also Retronic, a somewhat clone of the CR-78 (i think).

Obviously there are quite some differences in overall quality here. This can be true even for different versions of the same plugin; for instance the older version of the Elektrostudio Juno sounds way, way better than the newer version.

Corona has JP8080 modeled super saw unison and can do plenty of Juno-ish sounds but it definitely was not intended to emulate any Roland machine from the past

Same problem about many older free synths and SynthEdit stuff it looks like for example the plugins made by Kriminal (i still got most of them).

As for SIXth MONTH JUNE, yes, it says 'Underconstruction' [sic] but this appears to be merely a website glitch. If you check you will see that it says this for all of them, but in actuality they are all finished.

There is a decent sounding sh-1 emulation among the modules in Void Modular System. Have no idea how close to the original it is.



Mind you that Void is not cheap, the onboard patches are rather poor, illustrative and don't do any justice to the synth; lots of harsh unpolished sounds. And not at least that is hasn't been updated since 2005.


If you don't mind listing native formats, there is also the monobass from Orion, a TB emu:

Part of Retronyms' TableTop. Personally I love this one. There is also a Rebirth iPad edition and an iPhone edition made by Retronyms.

Then there is TB3.



Part of Pulze Code's Rhythm Studio App, which also includes a TR909 and a TR808 Emu and a somewhat minimalistic JP8000 kind of emu:




The TB3 sounds rather bad though, IMO.


In contrast this TB303/TR909/TR808 emulation sounds great:



As could be expected because it is Audio Realism's groovebox for iPad (2 x TB303, 1 TR909 and 1 TR808).

If we're listing iOS apps, then Sunrizer should be mentioned, it's a jp8000 emu (but much enhanced). A plugin version of this is/was in the making, but I don't expect it anytime soon.
