Hey,
let's do something constructive for a change: create and share SFZ mappings for free sample libraries that require commercial / proprietary software (like NI Kontakt) to be played!

I found that many great free sample sets / libraries could benefit from a .sfz mapping, since a free / open format is the best way to use free samples in my opinion. Sforzando is a great and free playback engine and not everyone has access to paid sample players like NI Kontakt.

I will start this thread by selecting some freely available libraries without .sfz mapping. Please feel free to add your own suggestions. Also, feel free to create and share mappings in the .sfz format.

How to use .sfz mappings: put them in the same place where you have the "samples" folder. Load the .sfz file in Sforzando.

So far (largely thanks to KVR user kinwie who created most of these fantastic mappings) we have now created mappings for the following sample libraries freely usable in Sforzando. Also, thanks to Redtide and Dsmolken for the hosting of the mappings and critical feedback.

It's in aria/sforzando format and won't load on other player.

Put it in the same place as the "samples" folder

edit (additional info) :
- rel on/off (cc67) for turning the release samples on/off
- legato (cc68) for activate the legato mode (monophonic)

@NTO You are right. I actually meant the free edition of DirectBass 2, which can be found here, alongside some other free guitar, bass and drum libs.

Just one minor thing: could you please upload the mappings only (without the samples included)?

Even if the samples are freely released, we should better not distribute them, since the license doesn't grant us explicit permission to do so (rather I linked to the original sites where they were initially shared in the initial post).

Still the same, sfz only load in sforzando and aria engine

Wow, thanks kinwie and NTO. You guys are doing a great job here!

I also want to try to convert / create some mappings, even though I have to do it manually, since I don't have any conversion tool available.

So the really big and comprehensive libs are most likely not my territory (too much manual writing).

If no information about the mapping provided, in a manual or the filenames or anywhere, you can always peek the supplied format for the mapping and settings in some demo app like EXSC which had the demo version if the app can read/support that format

But for aria sfz, I always make from scratch, type everything in notepad like a nerd

Btw, right now I'm mapping the Rogers 60s kit. Will upload it when finished.
p.s. luckily the key mapping is available in its pdf manual but can't see the velocity map so i create a flexible vel map using aria's #define macro, so it can be easily changed anytime needed

I was interested in Mihai Sorohan's Muted Trumpet, but the site he was hosting those on appears gone(? - both formats)

Ooh, too bad. If they cannot be found anywhere else (maybe Internet Archive?) I will delete them from the list.

Quality free woodwinds & brass sample sets are really rare, but I found some good ones that I will also add to the list in just a minute. They can be found at Freesounds.org - just raw samples, but very accurate: https://freesound.org/people/MTG/packs/20232/

Important note :
there is an illegal character (for Win OS) in this sample folder name, so change it to :

* I include a txt note inside the rar archive

Some features :
- Using keyswitch to select snare
- User can easily change key mapping, global velocity mapping and MIDI CC in the sfz file (the most top defines) via sforzando "Open In Text Editor" button
- Added ride and crash mute keys (60 and 61)
