So I have a question, of course. I've been using Cakewalk/Sonar since it was a DOS based MIDI only sequencer software. Started with a "backup copy" from someone else, but liked it enough that I quit using whatever other thing I was using at the time and bought a license for the home edition of Cakewalk as soon as it started allowing you to record audio directly to the DAW. I've been on the upgrade path every since, and now have the "lifetime update subscription" for Sonar Platinum.

So a few years back, my audio interface tanked on me, and I purchased a new Yamaha USB interface. It had Cubase bundled with it, the "lite" version. So I went ahead and installed that, had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it installed and even running on my computer, and then I had a huge learning curve to even get any kind of sound out of the thing. One of the things that I liked about Sonar, still like about it while it's running, is that I can just insert a track, click the "Input Echo" button, and hear what I'm playing. With Cubase, I had to mess with busses and inputs and routing before I could even hear myself play anything, and that wasn't good at all for my productivity.

So, to make a long story shorter, how does Mixcraft stack up to that? Once my keyboard controller and my input/mixer are set up, can I just toss a new track on there and hear what I'm playing? And what are the limitations as far as number of tracks, etc.?

I'm technically a SONAR convert; I had it 15 years ago when it first became "SONAR."

A couple of years ago I decided to get into recording again and auditioned a number of reasonably-priced DAW's, with one option being reactivating my ancient SONAR license.

One test I gave them all was the same one you describe: "how long did it take from first installation and startup to me being able to arm a track and record audio, and then play back what I just recorded?"

Mixcraft SMOKED the competition. Reaper was the worst by far.

The other things that I loved about it were the VERY handy smartphone remote control, which lets me start and stop recording and playback with my smartphone, most excellent when recording drums, the friendly forum support, the relative lack of bugs, the quick response by the devs when any were found, and not incidentally, the program's relatively light demands on the system one is running it on. It does fine on my secondary system with 24 tracks on a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with 6G of RAM.

Thanks. I've already gone and downloaded the trial version. Based on stuff I've seen other places, which pretty well echo your thoughts, I'm about 90 percent sure this is where I'm going to go. I haven't yet had a chance to do the install, probably will this weekend, and I'll see how it goes.

Sure, Joe. Oh, one thing I didn't answer, but you probably know by now, for most things like track count, there is no artificial limit to the number of them; you can have as many tracks as your system resources will allow. You can nest those submixes, add those effects all you want, although I don't tend to go too crazy.

Even on my more "hot rod" i7 3.4GHz 8G primary system I don't think I've done a project that used more than about 30 tracks or so. I'm a home studio recordist, not recording with a full string or horn section (yet!).

One thing that I can really endorse to anyone considering Mixcraft Pro Studio is that it comes with Acoustica's own Pianissimo Grand Piano VSTi, which is an excellent instrument, and worth the difference in cost between Mixcrasft Studio and the Pro version. That and Melodyne Essentials, plus the G-Sonique Psychedlic Tape Delay are the bundled plug-ins that make the difference for Pro Studio to me.
