I only found an old video on Youtube that explained some sophisticated modular patching to accomplish that.

Insert your FX (eg. Level Compressor), then right click on the slot and select "Setup Rack Sidechain".

excellent - really easy to setup.
Compression and Threshold as almost no effect - need to experiement further.

Not sure if this is the case, but you may need to add an auxiliary input (right click and select "Setup Auxiliary Ins/Outs").
