Where to get affordable website hosting for company/product? Most services seem to have extortion sized fees, which usually range anywhere between 500-1000 dollars per year. They market their services in the form of "$4 / month" but with all the hidden costs it's usually over 10x that price.

If you dont really need a database
https://www.netlify.com/ (vue, react static site)
https://vercel.com/ (vue, react static site)
Alot of people lately have been selling everything with shopify.com (drag and drop like wordpress) for downloadable content handling payments and stuff like that not sure about database but I'm sure they have an extension you can purchase
A little more barebones (great for php) starts at 12$ for server 15$ for database all managed for you

Unless you have a programmer onboard, then you probably want something pre-made such as Odoo.

I have HTML + CSS website. All I need is FTP connection to upload the few files and images and everything works great. The shop is via FastSpring so no extra tech requirements from the web hosting server in that regard either.

I would go with a reputable hosting service like Linode or Digital Ocean. Plans usually start at $5/month but you really need to look at how much storage you get and how much bandwidth.
My preference would be a plan where you get full access to the server, meaning you need to install the web server software etc yourself. It's more work (you need to learn about Linux etc) but gives you full control.

Wow, GoDaddy for instance is not as cheap as it used to be.

Can I register my own domain to point at that S3 bucket?

How does the e-mail handling work with that service? It forwards the e-mails to the mail server of your choice and you can setup the company's e-mail address name to be used in the outgoing e-mails? Any recommendations for e-mail service provider?BertKoor wrote: ↑Wed May 22, 2024 6:54 am Wow, GoDaddy for instance is not as cheap as it used to be.

Two good email hosting services are Fastmail or Rackspace Email. They can handle email on your domain even if your website is hosted somewhere else. You just need to set up the DNS records correctly.

Of course.
Edit: to both these options, yes. And look at Zoho.com for free or $1/mo email hosting (with your custom domain)
You only need to get involved with a westerner if you're running server-side scripts/etc. If you're just hosting an html+CSS site go the S3 or Github route and keep your $$$.

Afaik you get your own smtp service.
Thx for reminding me I need to fix it. Something there broke years ago and I did not bother looking after it.

I'm a moron and somehow quoted myself correcting "westerner" to "webserver"... which I still ended up spelling wrong.
Email hosting is one of the ONE things you want to sub out in 2024. Hosting your own mailserver is not worth the headache compared to how affordable some services are. You can always point your MX records to a new provider (via your registrar...I like Cloudflare) when a better price surfaces.
If you want some help, let me know, I do this all the time both professionally and for fun.
