I am a newbie and it seems quite expensive. I am wanting to start with Logic Pro or Ableton Live, but liking Logic more from videos.

Also, how much money if any have you made with music?
i have wasted a fair bit on things i don’t need , and it’s because we as humans always want new things we don’t need , i would go for logic if i was you but it’s what you like ableton suite has everything you need and so does logic , tbh there’s not much outside of those Daws that you could not find for free now mate , we waste money because we want new toys , when really we should be wasting time exploring and getting good at what we have , sometimes i have bought stuff played around with the sounds and not really used it because it looked and sounded good in the video , im a singer songwriter , why did i need a sound effect vst lol :hihi: all you need is the program trust me learn that or you just waste time with too much crap . good luck mate .
When you sit in a terrasse to get a beer, do you consider it "wasted" money, or just you decided to treat yourself ? :-).
So you want new toys and what ? Is it really wasted or you having fun ?

I think that what is wrong is people thinking they nnneeeeeeddddd this last plugin in order to do music. But I would bet that it is a very small part of us.
well it depends once your drunk out your nut , does keep swigging more drinks make a difference ?

it’s not the same thing really because one thing is easy and relaxing , and the other is a learned skill and takes focus and effort , so too many things will distract you unless you learn one and move on , we all know we have too much shit , well i used to , i’ve stripped it down to me and an acoustic guitar atm and some bitwig essentials but i’ve been guilty of buying stuff and just actually wasting my life just tinkering and no music gets done , i think the op should just get logic , me being a pc guy if i had logic nothing else would be needed , but as i use bitwig essentials at the moment i need a couple things .

Post

Too much to admit.

Well I do like buying vet to have fun with them. Some are essential for my creations. Some are not. It doesn't matter so much.

nah i guess not pal and your right , and maybe i’m talking from my own experience , but messing with plugins gets me no where , where playing chords on the piano or guitar get me everywhere , im so much better when i’m minimal , when i have 10 or more instruments installed with a 1000 or more presets , i find myself getting caught up in looking for that “ perfect patch to get started , i don’t know what the op wants to do , and it’s hard to give advice , but from my point of view i would just say start making music with the daw and nothing extra , maybe pick a daw that has a lot of sounds and pitch editing software and all the tools you need like Reason or Logic or cubase and maybe ableton suite although that doesn’t have the pitch editing software , these daws really have all you need and we know anything extra is Gas , but then it also depends what road he is going down because if he is gonna be a scorer of movies he may want some libaries and again there are some really good free Kontakt player libaries out now like ones from west wood instruments and fracture sounds and project sam , and the labs stuff and bbc discovery orchestra , i really think it’s like starting to play guitar with a really expensive guitar like a taylor playing it for a little while then saying ohh this next guitar looks good , you don’t need it you want it 😂 and yeah there’s nothing wrong with it , but for me anyway i like it minimal it helps me .

That's the thing with KVR, we are all different, with different backgrounds, different goals, different workflows, and that's awesome.

Even if I am different, hearing how YOU get creative is interesting to me. Cheers 😀

Way more than I should have, and I'm a bit embarrassed by that. :scared:

Just spent another 414€ on VSL's new solo cello and violin. :help:
This year alone, it would be well over 1000€, + a new midi controller.
One more thing on my horizon: Spitfire Audio Chamber Strings essentials.

I have spent more this week than I had last week

Woooo. What style of music are you doing? Cinematic? Ambient?

Have you tried friktion? What do you think about?

Post

I may score some of my holiday videos, the solo instruments will likely go into my rock/pop songs.
Thing is, I lost a shitload of stuff when I accidentally reformatted my external ssd in April. So, I've been updating my classical instrument VIs (with the exception of Best Service stuff because they took 4 years to do a Mac Silicon version of their player, and now what I had doesn't work with the new one). So, this year I bought Musio, Composer Cloud+, VSL solo violin and cello, and, today, Spitfire Chamber Strings Essentials.
+ the new Komplete Kontrol mKII keyboard.
I think I'm all set.
Also, I'm burned out on guitar right now. So, this is a bit of a break from guitar. Keys was my first instrument, though I neglected it since I first picked up the guitar 50 years ago.
It's also form of music therapy for me. I've had a rough 4 years.

Post

I have spent my money on Komplete 12 ultmate, Diva, Spire, the whole Cinematic Studio Series, Cinewind and infinite brass and a discounted Cineperc. I guess that would take around 3k - 4k.

I will only get the remaining Infinite series because of the minimal storage requirement which is good for my laptop and using less instrument slots for Renoise, but I will stop buying anything since then as I have enough tools for any genres.

If i count my 3 DAWs it’s probably around 2 thousand I guess and I’m sure I’m not quite done, close though. I’m sure I’ll find a couple more synths I have to have

It’s a rabbit hole for sure! I started off small with just a few here and there. Ultimately you get attracted to the better looking UI’s of ones like Fabfilter, you start to pine for those and ultimately pull the trigger dropping another hundred or more here and there. I would say easily a thousand dollars on plugins. Thank goodness none have gone out of business yet. I dread the idea of losing access to any for that reason because I’ve integrated them so thoroughly in every mix that it would devastate the mix if they became inactive.

My most recent acquisitions have been Soundtoys Bundle and Trackspacer by Wavesfactory. I’m loving both. I have almost all the Fabfilter plugins, all of the Native UAD plugins (plus a lot that are not native yet) and plenty more random acquisitions here and there like Softube’s Tape Saturation plugin and whatnot.

They’re a lot of fun to play with even if it’s just to experiment. I love remixing my tracks for months just for the fun of it even if I don’t release anything. It’s a fun, but expensive hobby.

Post

I can not be exact but fairly accurate, most of it is recorded in a spreadsheet, time period is from the end of 1997 to present.
Approx £1300 on sequencers & upgrades
Approx £3300 on VSTs
