Didn't James Newton Howard compose the music?
If we are talking about the same soundtrack, do a wikipedia search for James Newton Howard. He did many soundtracks. I like Signs and The Villge. Similar music you can get is from Hans Zimmer.

Yep... James Newton Howard does "soundtrack" music. So, look for it under soundtrack.
Honestly, I would venture to say that just about anything done by JNH is excellent. In addition to Signs and the Village (both of which I LOVE) I also recommend Unbreakable.
The Village features Hilary Hahn on violin. Some people scoffed at it, but I think it's a brilliant soundtrack. A lot of the music from the Village (as well as other JNH music for that matter) was featured in Condor Hero. Specifically, the love theme was from the Village.
Unbreakable has more of a heroic feeling to it... with the brass being prominent. Great stuff.
You should also check out Batman Returns, which features both JNH and Hans Zimmer as the composers.
And I very highly recommend Tears of the Sun, which is a soundtrack that I enjoy listening to quite a lot. That one features a lot of African motifs. Tears is Hans Zimmer.
While you're checking out Hans Zimmer, I also recommend the Last Samurai. Some very beautiful music in that one too, imo.

Just to drop another note. Few people realize that you can find great soundtrack music on the internet for free from the composers web sites. Two more favourites for me are:
Don Davis - famous for his work on the Matrix films. Not on his web site, but if you can buy the CDs with the music where he collaborate with Juno Reactor and Rage against the Machine. Top notch mixture of trance and orchestral.

Joel Mc Neely has done many Disney soundtrack. Don't sneer at it. It is not kiddy music. JNH ha done his fair share of Disney as well, e.g. Dinasour, which I love. So has Hans Zimmer (Lion King)

I hear you re the sneering...
But there is some awesome animation music out there, both western and also anime music.
JNH Atlantis is great.
Yoko Kanno, of course, for anime. Escaflowne is a favorite.
I'll have to check out Dinosaur. Is that still available?

You should be able to pick up Dinasour from Amazon. I got it from a local shop a while ago, but that is not much of a measure, as the shops here stock only the well known soundtracks.

Done! Amazon had it, though it is no longer officially available. The good news is that there are still a number of third party sellers who seem to have it and it's pretty cheap. About $4 range.Sepheritoh wrote:You should be able to pick up Dinasour from Amazon. So, I'm glad that this thread came up, even though it was Coxy who was the one looking for stuff.
The shops where I'm at can vary too, as you say - depending on the popularity. If it's super popular it stays around for a while, if it's more obscure it tends to come and go - especially for soundtracks.
BTW... since we were talking about James Newton Howard... are you familiar with his Dreamcatcher soundtrack? I've been debating about whether to order that.
Available on iTunes, Amazon, etc.

Zimmer's the worst. His music is a prime example of all that is wrong with contemporary film soundtracks.Sepheritoh wrote:If we are talking about the same soundtrack, do a wikipedia search for James Newton Howard. "Gee... Lisa Gerard is really, really "in" this month. Let me throw in some of her faux Middle Eastern vocals into a film about Coal Miners in Milwaukee just because it's cool."
Give me a fuckin' break.
I much prefer the older composers like Bernard Hermann, Jerry Goldsmith, Maurice Jarre and even Lalo Schifrin. Hell even John Williams is preferable to the dreck that passes for soundtracks nowadays.

Hi, thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Just to clarify I was specifically after the same style of music rather than the same type of composer/soundtrack

+1 - except i only liked the intro to "Navras" up until it actually becomes trance. I've not heard such a gorgeous choir in my life.Sepheritoh wrote: Don Davis - famous for his work on the Matrix films. Too bad the choir is so hidden in "Neodämmerung"...
Also, i really like alot of James Horner (especially Apocalypto, great soundtrack/world blend), and Elliot Goldenthal (Titus soundtrack). Also, Tyler Bates' score for 300 was quite nice and in a similar vein ( and it pretty much did a remake of Titus' opening theme, as well as some other folk song )

the "style of music" youre after is not very popular or heavily present outside of soundtracks. It's pretty much just "Soundtrack" music, and it draws heavily on classical music; so idk...Coxy wrote:Hi, thanks for all the replies and suggestions. It is a pitty you do not like Zimmer. It really is, as he is such a talented composer. He does the job that the producers want. And off course, what the public want. His score for Gladiator was brialliant, with or without Lisa. I got some of the other works from Lisa, and none has reached close to the level she achieved when working with Hans. He has done many soundtracks with other musicians. Lion King, Black Hawk Down, Pealr Harbour etc, etc. No-one can accuse him of following the flavor of the day. He has been doing it before any of the other composers followed.Bernard Quatermass wrote: Zimmer's the worst. His music is a prime example of all that is wrong with contemporary film soundtracks.
.
When it comes to tastes he is different fom John Williams and Bernstein. Maybe it does not fall in everybody's taste, but it does seem to suit many. Where many of the other heros has worked mainly with one or two directors (e.g. Williams+Speileberg, Hitchcock+Bernstein), Zimmer has worked with many directors. He can fit in with them all. Many of the others learned from him and started their careers as orchestrators for Zim. He has dome some good at least.
