I know I've heard a ton of lyrics that are annoying or just wrong, wondering which ones get to you. I'll start with this line from U2:
And every gambler knows that to lose
Is what you're really there for
If you know that you're really there just to lose, why be there?
And every gambler knows that to lose
Is what you're really there for
If you know that you're really there just to lose, why be there?
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

I don't think they meant it quite that way.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

From "Me Too" by Meghan Trainor
If I was you I'd wanna be me too
Why exactly would I want to be her?

Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

Much as I respect Neil Diamond,
"And no one there, not even the chair" (From, 'I am I said')
Is f**king shite.

That lyric is from a long list of songs written in English by Swedes (usually in the Max Martin pop factory) where they make a number of odd, inexplicable phrases.
See also: "Joyride" by Roxette and "All That She Wants" by Ace of Base
The lyric I hate is: "Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another you've been messing around" from Take it on the Run (Reo Speedwagon).

"What is love? Baby don't hurt me, no more"
I think the songwriter was/is German.
On one level, it contains a deep, nuanced philosophical contemplation.
On another level, it just sounds ridiculous

Yeah but there was also that terrible video - the whole song was a misogynistic anthem

But the lyric was written to mean "Hit me up on the phone one more time", but it was written by Martin who didn't get the alternate meaning as I was pointing out.
Oddly enough, Britney was the one who wanted the video in a school and she pushed for the outfit.
All so weird.
Great podcast about it here: https://slate.com/culture/2018/11/how-a ... l-hit.html
Hit Parade is really the best music history podcast out there.
