Cloudrum

Version reviewed: 1.0.1 on Windows

This is a very inspiring VST. The overall sound quality is incredible and I can get a lot of variations from one instrument. Some of the notes seem to have a bit of a rattle or dissonance at certain velocities, and there is rare occasion where a note will stick out like a sore thumb among the rest especially in a riff or arpeggio.

I love the ambience you can create with Cloudrum, and the internal effects are brilliant. If there was a version (paid or free really) that had more drum types featured I would definitely get it.

MJUC

Version reviewed: 1.4.2 on Windows

I really wanted a different compressor from the DAW native I was using. I put in research, I found some compressor plugins on sale, and then I found MJUC. For a little bit of money, you're being given three different compressors with their own character, a really cool UI, and a rich sound. The dedication that went into this VST is incredible (you can read about it on the website for Klanghelm) So really what you're getting is a world class compressor plugin that doesn't cost $300 or more. That is so cool. Tipping my hat to you Klanghelm.

IVGI

Extremely handy plugin. Subtle application of IVGI works magic for the character of any sound. I have another free saturation plugin that I use all the time. But for the parts of the mix that really matter...I use IVGI.

Mono/Fury

Version reviewed: 2.1.2 on Windows

Rich, punchy, warm, and spunky. I would have a hard time saying it was a software synth if I heard it in a blind test.

I notice that the filter envelope takes a minute to begin functioning when you first load a project containing Mono/Fury or when you first load the VST into a project. Caused me subtle alarm the first time I encountered that.

Digits

Version reviewed: 2.1 on Windows

I absolutely love the sounds I can get out of this synth. Rich warm pads or enormous bass (especially bass, this thing crushes it) I've already made several patches of my own on Digits.

Under the right conditions there is aliasing for every note. So that is something to keep in mind. The range of some of the knobs is a little fidgety as well.

HY-ESG

Version reviewed: 1.0.2 on Windows

It is always incredibly generous for reputable developers to offer free VSTs. HY-ESG is a great example of free VSTs occasionally being even better than paid ones. It was immediately so fun to use and so powerful. One and only squawk is that you can't create quite exactly the gate sequence you want. You may not notice that however, since the level of functionality and tweekability is incredible especially for a free gate effect. The interface is also really nice.
