Red Dragon

Reviewed By SampleScience [all]

Version reviewed: 1 on Windows

Don't judge a book by it's cover, because the Red Dragon synthesizer VST may look like a bit "amateur" when looking at his GUI but it's a very good instrument in it's own right. The included 384 presets really shows the possibilities & the synth is quite capable in creating a lot of diverse sounds. The Tim Conrardy presets are, for me, some of the best in the batch with his trademark space & galactic atmosphere. Kriminal also supply some tasty basses! There's some good FXs, basses, leads, ambient pads & textures included & I think it can suit a wide range of styles. Even if the interface seems a bit weird at first it is really easy to use & you can come up with good usable sounds very quickly. I think that's it main strength. I also like to browse the wide range of presets when looking for inspiration plus the fact that it's a synth with it's own oscillators makes the sounds more versatile than using samples one-shots. You can play on a wide range of notes/octaves & still have a good musical tone. Well worth the 10$ asking price!

Ubergate

Version reviewed: 1.3 on Windows

Ubergate is not just another trance gate plug-in. Rather; it is truly a Multi-FX work of art. Junebug and company have painstakingly created an FX unit that is intuitive and powerful. In addition to functioning as a standard gate, the gate section can be placed in a passthru or bypass mode. The independent attack, decay, and shuffle controls give you a high level of control over the operation of the gate. The gate has 4 parts with 16 steps per part. The steps can be tied together to create longer note duration. Using the ties in conjunction with decay parameter can yield some interesting results. The parts may be chained together to create an evolving sequence. The parts may also be switched via MIDI. The gate is smart enough not to allow the changes to take effect until the next measure.

The plug-in also sports two independent FX chains that are in parallel with each other. FX chain consists of a delay, filter, modulation, EQ, and channel module. The channel module is always active and controls how the outputs of both FX chains are mixed before leaving the plug-in. Each of the FX modules has been carefully crafted to give you the power to sculpt the sound to your tastes. Instead of inundating you with every parameter under the sun, the interface makes enough parameters available to give you control over your sound without requiring a master’s degree to use it.

The documentation is a wee bit sparse. There is no manual, but the plug-in does include a help screen that will get you up and running quickly.

A generous assortment of very good presets accompanies this plug-in. They cater to a variety of styles and really demonstrate the true power of this plug-in.

I tested this plug-in in several hosts and never experienced, a glitch, a crash, or anything unexpected.

Support is awesome. For every question I submitted, I had a response within 24 business hours. In many cases, the answers came much quicker.

All in all, the plug-in packs a powerful punch for a very fair price. I highly recommend it.

Ubergate

I love this VST effect! An affordable addition to anyone’s palette of digital effects. I find myself using this one effect more than all the other effects with similar sound possibilities that I've purchased before, including some that cost a lot more with well-known names. After reading the latest Electronic Musician article (Nov or Dec 06 ... I forget which issue) about loading multiple instances of the same effect in series (the mag wasn't reviewing this effect ... I just chose this one to play with), I tried this with Ubergate. Great results!
Do try this effect! You will love it! Lots of usable presets. Easy to take an existing preset to new sonic places. Well organized UI. A "must have" for anyone into serious groove making. I'm keeping an eye on Electrosounds for more to come after discovering Ubergate. I'm really surprised I'm the 1st to review this one. It is a gem. I’ve been using it on drums, guitars, and other VST synths. It makes it quite easy to take a simple groove and give it a lot of rhythmic character and variation.
