Waveform Free

Version reviewed: 13 on Windows

The best free DAW you can get. Sleek UI, doesn't get in your way, just works. No track count limit and VST support means that its better than almost any entry level version of a daw (free/paid). Waveform Free is a blessing for students and folks from countries where conversion rate is so bad that you'll have to pay couple months of rent or more to buy a DAW. Tracktion team are extremely generous and have allowed people like me to make music and be creative. Waveform 13 also fixed a lot of stability issues and i haven't faced a single crash.

Very powerful FM synth with loads of modulation possibilities.

Sounds great with four layers, colourful with animated LFO's.

requires a decent CPU.

DISCLAIMER
This user review will not be comprehensive; It will be my impression and reaction to the evolution of Tracktion. .. and my journey with this DAW.

THEN
Tracktion Waveform Pro 12 is the most recent version of a DAW that has been around since 2002, initially developed by a cat named Julien in the UK. I first bought a copy when Mackie took it over. I loved it, mainly for the one-screen, straightforward, transparent layout. It seemed way ahead of its time at the time. Eventually, it became a bit buggy, and updates were infrequent (one word). I moved on to other DAWs (a story in itself).
Years later, Tracktion reappeared! The original developer reacquired the software and resurrected it from the ashes like a phoenix. I kept an eye on development and occasionally launched it. I even reviewed a version along the way with an add-on synth called BioTek. Although I did not entirely switch back to Tracktion, it remained special and unique, standing apart from competitors due to its one-screen layout and Workflow.

NOW
Wow! Traction Waveform has evolved into a workstation beast! This DAW is designed to be fast, efficient, and creative. It delivers all the tools needed for music production, especially when working in electronic music. I realize we are dealing with audio, but it helps when the software looks good and Waveform looks marvelous. It is crisp and clean but not bloated and cluttered. Much work went into the interface to provide users easy access to tools without sacrificing the streamlined approach.

MY FAV Features:

  • Gorgeous Interface.
  • Intuitive, Musical Workflow.
  • Fast programming via MIDI and Step Clip.
  • Powerful FX Rack.
  • Micro Drum Sampler.
  • Micro Sampler.
  • Melodyne Integration.
  • Antares Auto-Tune Access.
  • CPU Efficient.
  • Responsive Support Team.
  • Price.

SUMMARY
Tracktion Waveform does what other DAWs do but uniquely. It has a sleek, ultra-modern IU and provides a slick workflow. For music producers who are new to DAWs, they will be able to dive in, explore, learn, and make music. Music producers migrating from another DAW must be more patient as this software behaves differently. They may need to adapt before uncovering the wonder of Waveform's Workflow. I highly recommend this workstation for anyone in electronic music production who is tired of the usual big box offerings and wants something ultra-modern, inspirational, and musical. The Price is relatively cheap for what it offers, and the free version has many features and no track limitations. Users can start with the free version and then add features they need for a reasonable price.

The possibilities are endless. Good user manual. Slightly questionable UI colors.

It's funny, but even without FM using itself, it is great subtractive (and samples) synth with all imaginable ways of modulation.

No CLAP support. Broken updates.

NOVUM

Version reviewed: 1.08 on Windows

There are many reasons I consider Dawesome Novum 5 out of 5. I'll list five of them.

1. The developer, Peter V, is very responsive to suggestions and takes his customers suggestions to heart.

2. The ability to create synchronized rhythms out of the grains is worth its weight in gold.

3. The ability to create standard notes out of atonal material via the comb filter is a welcome feature.

4. Since you can import your own waves, the sound palate of Novum is endless.

5. From shimmering, ethereal pads to gnarly, abrasive soundscapes, Novum has you covered.

Waveform Free

Version reviewed: 12 on Windows

Best Free DAW, no argument.

Totally Free and loads faster than Cakewalk (which has a laggy and cluttered GUI and requires you to reactivate every six months);

Minimum Requirement is so low that Waveform Free can even run optimally on dual core with 1Gig RAM which makes it better than Pro Tools First;

has Pattern Generator for automatic basslines, chords and Melody creation, which makes it better than Reaper in terms of quick MIDI Sequencing;

the ability to load third party plugins makes it far better than Studio One Prime which is so limited that it is useless for producers uses third party plugins a lot;

no limitations on number of tracks which makes it better than Ableton Live Lite (which allows you to create only eight tracks);

easy to modulate and automate parameters and so therefore more intuitive than Ardour.

This is the best FREE DAW for all kinds of producers. Go try it.
