This is a song I made to try to get my drums hitting harder(I put a eq on them and also a compressor). Any suggestions would be appreciated: https://soundcloud.com/david-mansfield- ... sbetter-11

1) Are the drums a loop, or do you have access to each kit part?

2) Do you have any multi-band tools like Pro-MB?

3) Is there a comparable commercial track that you would want your music to sit next to?

4) (maybe this should be my first question) Are you specifically focused on mixing, or are you building out a track as you go and want hard hitting drums while you work? This is important because I think one of the biggest things to let go of is needing hard hitting anything while still building out a track… Now if you already finished your track and are now working on mixing, just keep in mind there are an insane number of ways to achieve something similar and all of them can be the right way in the end.

Thanks for the advice!

I think one thing that could really help the snare slap is some reverb on it's frequencies somewhere between 1800—7000. Try to time it so that the decay is almost gone before the next snare hit. With your tempo here it would probably be around 3.75s.

The kick is pretty snappy already with a lot of high end info. If you wanted to beef up the punch you could try the Puig Tec EQP1A trick. Google will tell you about this.

Overall it's sounding good. Maybe just some saturation to warm everything up a bit, and a little more mix bus compression, but that's mastering stuff. Not sure if you're going there yet.

for my ears the beat sounds good. elxsound raised some good question which are worth to think about...
e.q. the beat sounds good for itself - but what will happen if it is played after a commercial track? can it compete?
it is better to have a track with some mistakes than a track without any soul
