Computer based speaker cabinet and booth responses

Is it possible to use computational models to calculate the sound from a general speaker cabinet placed at an arbitrary position in a small room?

Trying to answer this question, an automated computational concept has been developed by Dr.CabSim. By using two, parametrized, acoustic models a spectra of cabinet and room responses can be calculated. The obtained transfer functions are then the foundation for a completely numerically based speaker cabinet and booth plugin.

None of the developed acoustic models are tweaked or tuned in any way to emulate certain recorded speaker responses; the calculated responses are simply the result of the modelling approach and the chosen parameters.

The automated methodology is orchestrated by a simple code structure, looping systematically through a sequence of:

  • acoustic analyses.
  • post processing of the pressure responses.
  • a finalizing code generating phase.

A large amount of speaker and room combinations can easily be analysed and, 'sonically', be investigated using this simple plugin.

In addition to just being another cabinet simulator to the already vast collection out there. This modelling concept may have the potential to be used as a simulation based, audible, prototype tool in designing speakers.

A quick test of this guitar cabinet emulation plugin left me quite impressed. I appreciate the concept of adjusting parameters rather than sifting through endless impulse responses (IRs). It's quicker and more convenient to tweak one aspect of the sound at a time, rather than having to reset for each IR.

The sound quality is impressive. I don't mind if it doesn't precisely emulate a specific speaker cabinet, as long as I can achieve the desired sound. I'm confident that skilled programmers will be able to fine-tune the settings to closely match well-known models. The stereo feature is excellent, and the other parameters for making subtle to significant sound changes are also noteworthy. Additionally, I believe this plugin, when used as a filter, could be intriguing on other tracks such as vocals and drums.

Since this is still in early development, I have high hopes for future iterations of this concept. I encourage the developers to continue their excellent work. Thank you.
