Rebel Technology announces "OWL Programmable Effects Pedal" with Kickstarter Campaign

-
Rebel Technology

Rebel Technology has announced the OWL Programmable Effects Pedal, described as "one pedal, potentially unlimited effects".

This is a multi-effects pedal with a difference - it is completely re-programmable via USB. You can change its function by loading different patches onto the pedal using a simple drag and drop operation.

The pedal is both open source hardware and software, meaning anyone, anywhere can create effects patches for it for free and without restrictive licenses.

The OWL has been designed with three audiences in mind:

  • Musicians can download effects from a growing online patch library.
  • Developers interested in audio effects can program their own effects in C++ using the open source toolchain.
  • Hackers can modify or extend the hardware using available pin outs on the PCB.

The OWL is looking for crowdfunding on Kickstarter - so anyone who pre-orders will help fund them to produce the first batch. They've also launched a competition to win one of our pedals.

OwlSim

Rebel Technology has also developed a C++ project called the Owl Simulator (OwlSim), that makes it easy to test your patches directly on your computer. You can download the alpha version of the OwlSim from GitHub.

The OwlSim uses the Juce library and is cross-platform (Mac / Windows / Linux). Link your patch with the OwlSim and you will be able to run it as a VST or AU in your favorite DAW.

The OwlSim allows for straightforward testing and debugging of your code. It also lets you run your favorite patches on your computer for a home studio session.
