Spectral Plugins

Spectral Plugins has announced that OCS-45 Cassette Simulation, developed in collaboration with and previously sold by Oversampled, is now available from spectral-plugins.com.

OCS-45 Cassette Simulation brings the lo-fi, vintage feel of cassette tapes to your DAW. Choose from four cassette types, each with its own character, and bring in pitch modulation, background noise and dropouts. OCS-45 also offers distortion processing with five distinct distortion types.

The plugin is available now for the new regular price of $15 for Mac and PC in VST, AU and AAX formats. You can find out more on the Spectral Plugins website.

Wow/Flutter

Add the variations in pitch and tonal degradation that are characteristic of cassette tape recordings with OCS-45's Wow/Flutter module. Visualize the changes you're making to your sound with a single flowing line representing the modulated audio signal.

Dropouts

Physical cassettes have a tendency to randomly cut out short amounts of sound periodically, due to damaged or degraded tape, or playback heads. OCS-45's Dropouts module applies this effect separately on both the left and right channels and runs independently on both input signal and the Noise generating module.

Noise

One of the features of low-fidelity cassette tapes is background hiss, caused by the electronic circuitry and the magnetic elements of the machinery. OCS-45's Noise module provides four noise types to choose from, and the noise generator is equipped with an envelope follower so it will run alongside your audio and stop whenever your sound stops playing. The D/O switch can also be flicked on to apply periodic dropouts to the noise signal.

Distortion

OCS-45's distortion processing module works either in combination with the other effects modules on the plugin, or alone. Choose between five types of distortion: tube, diode, soft clip, saturation and downsample.

Cassette Types

Each of the plugin's four cassette emulations are modelled on the major tape types of the golden era of compact cassettes, classified in 1979 by the IEC: Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV. The magnetic tape in each type was created with a different chemical, and performed and sounded uniquely as a result.
